Keeping it Together When Things Fall Apart: Harnessing the Power of Emotions to Understand Your Child's Behavior
An invaluable resource for parents, therapists, and anyone who works with families…
This book is designed to assist parents in understanding that all behavior has meaning - even defiant, challenging, annoying, and disrespectful behavior. This brief guide, which utilizes the theory and strategies of RFP-C, will help you understand why your child is struggling, what you can do to support them, and how to care for yourself while caring for your child. It is our hope that we can give you information to better understand your child and feel more empowered as a parent when it comes to challenging behaviors.
Chapters include:
Parents - What about us?
Why Does My Child Act This Way?
Understanding Your Child’s Emotions
Helping Your Child Express Their Emotions
Limit-Setting and Discipline
Caring for Yourself
Different mental health professionals utilize a variety of techniques – such as teaching parents techniques for responding to disruptive behavior or prescribing medications. The approach we describe emphasizes remaining curious about what’s going on underneath our children’s behavior. When we do this, we’re better able to help our children express these feelings in ways that do not involve acting out. When we acknowledge the strong emotions, these behaviors can stir up within us, we’re better able to anticipate our own response. We can decide on limits to defiant behavior that acknowledge our child’s feelings, while honoring our own boundaries and values. In other words, although children may continue to be defiant at times, greater emotional awareness and understanding allows us to “keep it together when things fall apart.”
